HP Launch Video Conferencing Software

Computer makers, Hewlett Packard (HP), introduced the HP SkyRoom, a video conferencing software solution that runs on HP desktop workstations for both corporate and individual users.

In Indonesia the HP office in the Kuningan area of Jakarta Tuesday, HP's Market Development Manager Cynthia Defjan Indonesia, said the main target market is the HP SkyRoom enterprise in Indonesia.

Seeing the need for staff meetings, product introduction, employee training, and others, HP assuming greater opportunities in the Indonesian market with the main target of the enterprise sector, said Cynthia.

AMD Finally Shows Fusion, its Accelerated Processing Unit

 Four years after buying graphics chipmaker ATI, AMD shows the goods at Computex: called Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), these new chips which merge CPU and GPU are supposed to save power and cost (according to AMD) although it doesn't seem to us like they would generate any groundbreaking savings on both counts. A few months ago, Intel has shown that it too had embedded a graphics chip to a CPU.
That said, AMD's Fusion is superior to Intel's CPU/GPU hybrid graphics, and APUs are able to also perform general purpose computing to help the main processor, if apps support it - not all CPU/GPU hybrid are created equal. It would be a *real* game changer if developers were starting to rely on having another set of processing units inside every AMD processors (I suspect that AMD will pay select devs to do it…). For that, the APUs need to support DirectCompute and/or OpenCL, two standards that Intel's graphics solution doesn't support now.

If the fact that Larrabee is "launching" not as a GPU, but as a kind of multicore graphics demo unit, sounds like a cancellation to you, that's because it kinda sorta is. It's not a cancellation in the sense that Intel is throwing in the towel on discrete graphics, because that's definitely not the case. The company reiterated that it still plans to launch a many-core discrete graphics product, but won't be saying anything about that future product until sometime next year. Whatever it is, it won't be the hardware/software combination that it previously announced, and that we described of Intel's big August 2008 Larrabee reveal. It will be something else, and Intel wouldn't even characterize the relationship of that future something to the current Larrabee product.

The main issue behind the delay, it appears, was the hardware. That's not surprising, because Larrabee is a big, complex part, and it's quite a departure from anything that Intel has done. The hardware delay would have resulted in a software delay, and if Intel were to launch Larrabee with an immature software stack then it would be roadkill as a GPU.

Even though Intel couldn't have the Larrabee software ready on a timeframe that would make it competitive with NVIDIA and ATI (again, Larrabee is really a hardware/software hybrid GPU), the chipmaker can still push out the hardware itself and let others have a go at using it for graphics and HPC. Hence the plan to release it as a development platform for doing multi- and many-core research for HPC and graphics.
The Larrabee delay is obviously great news for NVIDIA, and even better news for AMD. This leaves both competitors to share the market for discrete GPUs, and quite possibly next-gen game consoles, for the next two years. NVIDIA's underlying long-term problems (the death of its integrated graphics processor market and the ongoing decline in the high-end discrete GPU market) are still there. And AMD still has well-documented challenges of its own as it struggles to regroup and return to growth after a brutally punishing few quarters of layoffs and cost-cutting. But execs at both companies have got to be high-fiving each other right now.

As for Intel's long-term future in the discrete GPU market, we'll have to wait until next year before we know

Nuclear Reactor Aims for Self-Sustaining Fusion

In a few years, an experimental nuclear fusion reactor near Moscow could be the first to yield a self-sustaining fusion reaction. If the Italian-Russian project is successful, it would be a key milestone for fusion power.

The proposed reactor is based on a design developed by Bruno Coppi, a professor of physics at MIT, and principal investigator on the reactor project with Italy's National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment. Three similar reactors based on the same design have already been built at MIT. Italian and Russian physicists plan to meet on May 24 to chart a course for the new reactor, called Ignitor, in the first such meeting since the two countries agreed to join forces on the project in April.

Ignitor is a tokamak reactor, a doughnut-shaped device that uses powerful magnetic fields to produce fusion by squeezing superheated plasma of hydrogen isotopes. As an electric current and high-frequency radio waves pass through the plasma, heating it to extreme temperatures, the surrounding electromagnetic field confines the plasma under high pressure. The combined pressure and heat causes the hydrogen nuclei to fuse together to form helium in a process that releases tremendous amounts of heat. In a fully functional fusion reactor, this heat would be used to power an electricity-generating turbine.

A much larger, far more complex tokamak fusion reactor--the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER)--is planned for construction in Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, France. ITER, which will be completed in 2019 and ready for full-scale testing in 2026, will be closer to a functioning fusion generator but will not produce a self-sustaining fusion reaction. Ignitor will be a sixth the size of ITER and will test the conditions needed to produce a self-sustaining reaction.


"Ignitor will give us a quick look at how burning plasma behaves, and that could inform how we proceed with ITER and other reactors," says Roscoe White, a distinguished research fellow at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

But Ignitor will only test one key aspect of fusion. "It will give us information that is important, but it won't give us all the information we need and certainly doesn't replace ITER," Steven Cowley, director of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire, U.K. "It's a demonstration that you can create ignition, but it's not really a pathway to a reactor."

Unlike ITER, Ignitor doesn't include many of the components that a real reactor would require. For example one crucial missing part is the "breeder blanket," which contains lithium and sits inside the reactor's magnetic coils, providing a continuous supply of tritium--one of two isotopes fused in the reaction. Ignitor's design is so compact that there is no room for a test blanket inside its coils.
Another limitation of Ignitor is the fact that its high electromagnetic field causes a significant reduction in the conductivity of most superconducting materials. To get around this, Ignitor relies primarily on conventional copper coils to create its magnetic field. But these coils can only operate for short bursts before they overheat. As a result, Ignitor can only sustain ignition for bursts of four seconds. ITER, which relies on superconducting coils and also draws on a significantly larger volume of plasma, is designed to maintain its peak output for 400 seconds.
